If I had a vote, Heaven Hill’s Elijah Craig Barrel Proof (134 proof) would be my front runner for “American Whiskey of the Year “. Even if you don’t like Elijah Craig 12 Year, it is hard to argue with the quality of that incredibly complex and rich bourbon, and the $39 MSRP is simply too good to be true. As if we weren’t spoiled enough knowing that Heaven Hill will be releasing about one batch of ECBP per quarter, now we will have a similar offering coming from Buffalo Trace.
Introducing… Stagg Jr
Stagg Jr has just been given a release date via a press release from Buffalo Trace and the statistics are looking good. Stagg Jr will carry a nearly identical proof to ECBP at 134.4, an eight year age statement and a $49.99 MSRP. Stagg Jr comes in a Breckenridge Bourbon style bottle and looks to be another allocated item for bourbon hunters to seek out during a very dense release season. For most western states, that means August will bring another batch of ECBP, the next Buffalo Trace Experimental Collection which will be a wheated bourbon at various proofs, the “Last Millennium” Abraham Bowman, and the long awaited Stagg Jr. Don’t blow into all your bourbon savings in August, because that isn’t even the “big” bourbon release month.
From the press release, it sounds like the availability will be very similar to ECBP, but no definitive list of states or number of bottles was given. Time to start pestering your local liquor stores, quadruple checking K&L and The Party Source, and saving up some money for lucky finds in the wild.
